BSB BRANDS HATCH Round 13 1/10/06

SUPERBIKES

Leon Haslam (Ducati) made sure of taking home the Audi car by setting pole position in qualifying.  He was joined on the front row of the grid by Shane Byrne (Suzuki), Michael Rutter (Honda), one of the surprises, and Tommy Hill (Yamaha).

The awaited 3 way scrap to decide the title ended when Gregorio Lavilla (Ducati) crashed out just after the start.  Haslam lead, closely followed by Ryuichi Kiyonari (Honda), so it was now a battle between the two of them for the title.  Byrne was lying 3rd with Rutter working his way into 4th place.  Byrne took a heavy tumble on lap 13, and the race was finally stopped on lap 14, with Kiyonari taking the win from Haslam by a mere 0.181 seconds.

Racw 2 was held in wet conditions with Kiyonari leading the way for the first 6 laps until Haslam took over with an impressive display of skill in the wet to win by 8.7 seconds.  Hill crashed on lap 15 bringing the second race to a premature end.  Lavilla had already retired on lap 1 with mechanical problems, so Kiyonari's 2nd place was enough to give him the British Superbike Championship title, with Haslam finishing 2nd and Lavilla 3rd.  Jonathan Rea (Honda) finished 3rd in the race with Karl Harris (Honda) finishing 4th.
